The Google Business Profile setting most local businesses get wrong

Why the primary category matters so much

Google uses it as the strongest signal of what your business is. A dental clinic listed under 'Dentist' and one listed under 'Cosmetic Dentist' compete in different results, for different queries, with different intent. Choosing the wrong one caps your visibility no matter how many reviews you gather.

How to test it properly

List the businesses ranking above you for your money query and check their primary category. If a pattern emerges, change yours, note the date, and watch rankings for four weeks. Change one thing at a time — categories, service list and description all move results, and testing them together tells you nothing.

Secondary categories are not free

Adding ten secondary categories dilutes rather than expands. Pick the ones you genuinely serve, keep the list tight, and make sure your services and photos support the claim.
